Minneapolis – July 18, 2008 – “Wind and other renewable energy sources are not enough,” says chemical engineer and energy expert Joseph Shuster. “Al Gore and the leaders of this country need to stop presenting inconsequential band-aid solutions and embrace nuclear energy as the backbone of an energy plan that will lead us away from fossil fuels to energy independence.”
Shuster’s plan is outlined in his new book Beyond Fossil Fools…The Roadmap to Energy Independence by 2040 and it presents an attainable and affordable solution.

Shuster’s Plan includes:
•Vigorously support a combination wind, solar and nuclear energy (fast neutron reactors) by 2040.
•Transform transportation as rapidly as possible, away from internal combustion engines to hybrid plug-ins and all-electric vehicles.
•Aggressively develop biofuels from non-food sources such as cellulosic ethanol and algae biodiesel.
According to Shuster, Mr. Gore’s proposed 10-year plan is not possible because “we can’t get there with wind turbines (need over a million in the U.S.) or any other intermittent energy source. We need a more expensive plan that includes building nuclear power plants.” Shuster adds, “Ultimately, the government must facilitate the inevitable inclusion of nuclear power or we won’t even get there in 30 years.”
Joseph Shuster is frustrated by Gore’s constant attention to global warming and says it is just one dramatic symptom among many of the problems of burning fossil fuels. “The only viable way to end human-caused global warming is to stop using them and move to a combination of nuclear, solar and wind energy. The transition to new renewable energy sources must be completed by 2040 or conventional oil reserves will run out. A 50-year transition will result in certain and severe economic hardship.”
